about

“Despite the madness of war, we lived for a world that would be different. For a better world to come when all this is over. And perhaps even our being here is a step towards that world. Do you really think that, without the hope that such a world is possible, that the rights of man will be restored again, we could stand the concentration camp even for one day? It is that very hope that makes people go without a murmur to the gas chambers, keeps them from risking a revolt, paralyses them into numb inactivity. It is hope that breaks down family ties, makes mothers renounce their children, or wives sell their bodies for bread, or husbands kill. It is hope that compels man to hold on to one more day of life, because that day may be the day of liberation. Ah, and not even the hope for a different, better world, but simply for life, a life of peace and rest. Never before in the history of mankind has hope been stronger than man, but never also has it done so much harm as it has in the war, in this concentration camp. We were never taught how to give up hope, and this is why today we perish in gas chambers.”

lyrics

I still remember that look you gave me
As I walked right through the gates
Because you swore you’d never see this face again
If it meant they’d take me too
At least I’d be taken straight to you
I swear I’ll marry you the day we leave this place

We watched in disarray
At the way we all would break
At every brick-walled man we watched those damn camps shake
We swore that when the Reds came through
When they see exactly just what man can do
The world would never close its heart or let it get this far again

Spent four years dead/awake
Reflecting on everything I’d seen
On how love and lust they sort of look the same
On how in four short years
We left the camps but kept the fear
I lost my art, my love and the hope that all this blood would steer us clear

From the same mistakes
From the humiliation and the shame
This is my farewell dear Maria though it seems in vain
That I must go this way
But I’ve seen the SS, the Reds, prisoners and kings
And now they’re starting to all look the same to me

We watched in disarray
At the way things never change
At every brick-walled man we watched manipulate
Justice and truth
Turned out to be for fools like me and you
So here we are, back at the start, where you find out truly what a life is worth

As the disappointed lover
